GNOME Photos 3.28.0

GNOME Photos is an open source application that allows users to easily access, organize and share their photos when using the GNOME desktop environment on any Linux-based operating system.

Initially introduced in the 3.10 release of the GNOME project, the software is now used as the default image organizer of the controversial desktop environment. It should also work with any other environment if all requirements are met.

Features at a glance

With this application, users will be able to view photo collections that are stored locally on the predefined Photos folder inside the Home directory, access photos from attached devices, and view photos stored on online accounts.

In addition, it allows users to access photos that are stored on supported DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) media servers, view new photos shared by their friends, view full screen slideshows of all their photos, as well as to share and upload photos.

Very basic image manipulation functionality, such as delete, print, add to favorites and add to album, is also provided in the GNOME Photos application. In addition, you will also be able to open selected photos in a full featured image viewer, such as Eye of GNOME.

Offers a familiar graphical user interface

The application’s user interface is very similar to the GNOME Documents software, except for the fact that you cannot search photos. By default, photos are loaded on-demand, and users have access to the albums, photos and favorites view modes.

Clicking a photo in the Photos view mode will open it in the same window, from where you can navigate back and forward between your photos, or go back to the entire collection. Furthermore, the application allows you to set a photo as the default desktop background.

Bottom line

All in all, GNOME Photos is yet another modern application that follows the GNOME HIG (Human Interface Guidelines) specification and will probably replace existing image viewer apps.
