Compiz alike magic lamp effect 10

Making the switch from macOS to most Linux distributions shouldn’t be particularly difficult. Be that as it may, there’s no denying the fact that macOS is much more user-oriented, more user-friendly, and a lot more stylish.

Thankfully, GNOME does have a few shell extensions that can help make Linux look a bit more macOS-esque. One such GNOME Shell extension is appropriately named Compiz alike magic lamp effect.

While the name is not particularly attractive, at least it makes it somewhat clear what the extension is all about, namely adding a “magic lamp genie” effect to all window operations.

Nostalgia-inducing GNOME Shell extension

It’s designed to emulate Apple’s famous flashy window minimization and maximization effect, and to be honest, it’s actually not bad.

The extension might also bring a bit of nostalgia to Linux users who loved the Compiz, the popular 3D composite window manager.

But how good is it, really?

We have to be honest here: don’t expect the same level of quality as you found on Compiz. Quite obviously, the extension can’t compare to the original Apple effect either.

While it’s not as smooth, or as pixel-perfect in terms of animation, the GNOME Shell extension is still worth a try. One of the main benefits is that you can adjust the speed of the genie/lamp animation. You can also control the angle of the animation, and that’s pretty much about it.

Verdict

Just like the Compiz effect and the macOS original effect, Compiz alike magic lamp effect will not boost your productivity. However, if you’re a fan of window effects in general, or the macOS genie effect in particular, then you will definitely want to give this little extension a quick try.
