There are a lot of good file renaming apps for Linux, and even more on macOS and Windows. However, very few of them offer a plethora of advanced features.
Meet Szyszka a modern, stylish, but more importantly fast and efficient bulk file renamer. It’s written in Rust, it has a GTK3 GUI, and it works on all major OSes out there: Windows, macOS, and Linux (please note that the macOS and Windows versions are still not properly tested).
If you’re wondering about the name, know that it means “Pinecone” in Polish. Strange? Maybe, but it’s definitely a name you will have a chance to remember (as we all know what standard, hum-drum names most file renaming apps tend to have).
What can Szyszka actually do for you
The main highlight of the application is definitely its multitude of rules that can be freely combined. Not only that but the app is designed to handle large workloads (hundreds and thousands of records). You can use the app to replace text, trim text sections, as well as add numbers and text to the names of your files.
The app can also purge text, and change the letters to both uppercase and lowercase. However, one of the best aspects of Szyszka is the fact that it allows you to create your own custom rules. Needless to say, you can edit and reorder these rules as you see fit.
Some plans for the future include the addition of Regex support, the ability to save and load presets, as well as an option for trimming x number of characters.
Working with Szyszka
Even though this is a lot more advanced than most basic file renaming apps, it’s remarkably user-friendly.
The way you work with Pinecone is pretty similar to the workflow of other apps: you load folders or files, you select one of the default rules from the dedicated menu (or create custom ones yourself), and click “Start Renaming.”
Of course, as mentioned before, you can reorder the rules, as well as reorder the file order using the dedicated “One Up” and “One Down” buttons located on both the top and bottom parts of the GUI.
Verdict
Szyszka aka Pinecone is for sure one of the better file renaming apps out there.
It’s simple enough to be used effectively even by beginners, but it also offers a lot of advanced renaming options (such as the ability to create complex custom rules) to keep advanced users happy.
