BakAndImgCD 21.0

BakAndImgCD is an open source and minimalistic Linux distribution based on the 4MLinux operating system. It doesn’t provide users with a desktop environment and can be used for general system maintenance.

Actually, this specialized Linux distribution can be used to backup or partition disk drives. While the data backup functionality supports the Btrfs, EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, ReiserFS, XFS, HFS, HFS+, FAT, NTFS, JFS, and Minix file systems, the disk imaging function uses the Partclone, Partimage and GNU ddrescue open source tools.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live CDs

The system is distributed as a single Live CD image that can be used on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, no matter the operating system installed on the respective computer. The boot medium includes only two entries, to start the live environment with default display settings or using the VESA framebuffer.

Getting started with BakAndImgCD

After starting the live environment, users will be dropped to a shell prompt, where they have to login with the root/root username and password. Immediately after, they will be greeted by a welcome message (please read it, as it contains important information).

Long story short, there are only three main commands that can be used: backup for manually backing up files, fdbackup for automatically backup files, and image for creating disk images of local hard drives.

After a successful backup process, the system will output one or more archive files or images that can be automatically uploaded to a remote FTP server via dial-up, Wi-Fi or Ethernet network interfaces.

Based on 4MLinux

Being based on the latest version of the 4MLinux Backup Scripts, BakAndImgCD is fully compatible with the UNetbootin application, which can be used to deploy the live environment to a USB flash drive.

There are many Live CD Linux operating system out there that can be used to backup or partition disk drives, including some popular ones like SystemRescueCD, Clonezilla Live CD or GParted Live CD, but BakAndImgCD is one of the most minimal and simple to use.
