- Updated phpMyAdmin to 5.0.0
Bitnami Mahara Stack is a multiplatform and free graphical installer that lets you easily and quickly install the Mahara software, as well as all of its runtime dependencies on personal computers and laptops. It includes ready-to-run versions of Mahara, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, PHP, and other required software.
What is Mahara?
Mahara is an open source, platform-independent and completely free web-based application that has been designed from the ground up to act as an e-portfolio system backed by a flexible display framework.
Installing Bitnami Mahara Stack
To install Mahara on your personal computer using the Bitnami Mahara Stack installer, which is supported on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, start by download the package that corresponds to your computer’s architecture (32 or 64-bit).
Save the package on your desktop or Home directory, make it executable (right click on the file, go to Properties, access the Permissions tab and check the “Allow executing file as program” option), double click the file and follow the instructions displayed on the installer.
Run Mahara in the cloud
In addition to installing Mahara on personal computers, you can run it in the cloud, thanks to Bitnami’s pre-built cloud images designed to be compatible with Windows Azure, Google Cloud or Amazon EC2 cloud hosting providers. It is also possible to run Mahara on Bitnami’s own cloud hosting servers.
Virtualize Mahara on VMware or VirtualBox
Furthermore, Mahara can be virtualized on the powerful Oracle VirtualBox or VMware ESX/ESXi virtualization software, as the company provides a virtual appliance based on the latest LTS release of the Ubuntu Linux operating system.
The Bitnami Mahara Module and Docker container
Besides the Bitnami Mahara Stack product reviewed here, Bitnami also offers a module for its LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP), MAMP (Mac, Apache, MySQL and PHP) and WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP) stacks, called Bitnami Mahara Module. A Mahara Docker container can also be downloaded from the project’s website.
