What’s new in Calculate Linux Desktop Xfce 20:
- We moved to profile Gentoo 17.1.
- All binary packages were recompiled with GCC 9.2.
- Calculate Linux will no longer come in 32 bits.
- eselect replaced layman as the overlay manager and the enabled overlays moved to /var/db/repos.
Calculate Linux Desktop Xfce is the second desktop edition of the Calculate Linux operating system, this time built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment. Calculate Linux is an open source Linux distribution created by a single man, Alexander Tratsevskiy, a Russian developer. The project is based on the stable and powerful Gentoo Linux operating system.
Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs
Just like the KDE flavor, this edition is distributed as two Live DVD ISO images that can be deployed on both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. It provides support for several languages, including English and Russian.
The boot medium is identical with the one used on the main Calculate Linux Desktop edition, which is powered by the KDE desktop environment. It allows users to start the operating system installed on the first disk, copy the live environment to RAM (requires 3GB or more), boot a live session without the X11 Window System, and test the system memory for errors.
Xfce is the default and only desktop environment
The Xfce desktop session is customized to look exactly the same with the KDE desktop environment provided in the Calculate Linux Desktop (CLD) flavor. It features a single panel placed on the upper part of the screen. You can use the panel to launch applications, interact with opened windows, switch between virtual workspaces, or interact with the system tray area and the main system functions.
Among the pre-installed applications, we can mention the LibreOffice office suite, Chromium web browser, Audacious music player, SMPlayer video player, GIMP image editor, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Thunar file manager, as well as numerous other open source utilities.
Designed for low-end computers
As mentioned before, this is the second edition of Calculate Linux Desktop, specifically designed to be used on low-end computers where the main KDE edition can’t be installed. It is also the perfect operating system for those who love the Gentoo/Xfce combination.
