Giara 1.0.1

While it may not be the most popular or the most official service of this type, Reddit still holds its spot as being an awesome social news aggregation/discussion website.

Reddit’s website is built to be as simple and as unobtrusive as possible. However, if you don’t want to rely on the browser each time you want to check out a subreddit, you could try out Giara.

What is Giara?

Giara is a unofficial, free, and open-source Reddit client that’s primarily designed for Linux. It can be installed from Flathub, which means that it should work without issues on most Linux distributions.

Even though Giara is not the most stylish app out there, it looks at home on most modern Linux distributions (thanks to the fact that it’s built with Python, GTK4 and libadwaita).

Giara offers you pretty much the same functionality as the official Reddit website. This means that you can read the latest content, downvote or upvote posts, as well as post content yourself (such as text, links, photos, videos).

Offers a few customization options as well

Most Reddit clients (especially for Linux) don’t offer much in terms of configuration. Giara, on the other hand, does offer its users a bit of “wiggle room.”

From the app’s Settings menu, you can clear the app’s cache, change the display patterns for the posts, activate the dark mode, opt to blur or display NSFW pictures, activate or deactivate the preview of post thumbnails, as well as tweak various privacy-related options.

Conclusion

While not particularly impressive, Giara is a decent app that gets the job done without fuss. It brings Reddit a bit closer to your computer’s desktop, and makes the whole experience a bit more friendly, even though, we have to say it, at the cost of some speed (as it’s not the “snappiest” apps out there).
