Greenie Linux Desktop Edition 16.04

Greenie Linux is an open source distribution of Linux based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, and designed from the ground up to be used by home users in Slovakia and Czech Republic. It uses the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Project) as its default desktop environment.

Availability, supported architectures and boot options

The distribution is available for download as a single Live DVD ISO image that can be easily written to a USB flash drive of 1GB or bigger, or burned onto a blank DVD disc using any CD/DVD burning software. Both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures are supported at this time.

From the boot prompt, users will be able to try the operating system without installing it, check the media for defects (only if using a CD disc), run a memory diagnostic test, boot an existing OS, as well as to directly install the distribution, without testing it, which is not recommended.

Lightweight desktop environment and powerful apps

As mentioned, the distribution uses the lightweight LXDE desktop environment, which features a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen. From there, users can access the main menu and launch applications, as well as to interact with running programs and the functions of the system tray area.

Default applications include the Midori and Mozilla Firefox web browser, FileZilla file transfer client, Pidgin instant messenger, Transmission torrent downloader, Skype VoIP client, FocusWriter text editor, Calibre ebook library management tool, Sigil ebook editor, and the entire LibreOffice office suite.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Greenie Linux is a lightweight and handy distribution of Linux, specifically designed for Czech and Slovak users. The English language is also supported, but must be enabled during the installation process. It can be easily used to revive old computers or machines with low-end hardware components.
