IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition is an open source Java IDE (Integrated Development Environment) software written in the Java programming language and intensely focused on developer productivity. It provides Java developers with a robust combination of enhanced development tools, including refactoring, J2EE support, and version controls integration.

Features at a glance

While the Community Edition edition of IntelliJ IDEA includes fewer features and functionality than the commercial Ultimate Edition reviewed on Softpedia, it still manages to offer a lightweight IDE for Java SE, Scala, Clojure, Kotlin and Groovy development. It also integrates well with the PHP, Ruby and Python programming languages.

The software provides users with a powerful development environment for building Google Android applications. It integrates well with TestNG, JUnit, Ant, Maven, and other popular SCMs (Software Configuration Management) applications, as well as with several SQL databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.

Among other features, we can mention static code analysis support, support for multiple languages, XML support, J2ME (Java Platform 2 Micro Edition) support, full Java SDK 1.5 support, VCS (Vendor Credentialing Service) database integration, as well as debugging and running functionality.

Supported operating systems and under the hood

The application is available on Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems, suitable for 64-bit and 32-bit computers. A quick look under the hood will show us that it is written entirely in the Java programming language. IntelliJ IDEA is also distributed as a commercial version with more, powerful features, called IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate Edition.

At the moment, the Community Edition of IntelliJ IDEA is available for download as a pre-built binary package that is completely free and allows you to quickly start developing apps in the Java programming language. The source code of the program is also distributed for free on the project’s website (see link below).
