Iotas is a typical free, open-source, and cross-platform note-taking app, but with a twist – it also allows you to synchronize your notes with Nextcloud Notes.
It can be installed on pretty much all the popular Linux distributions (just as long as they’re Flatpak-enabled) directly from Flathub.
In terms of looks, Iotas is also not something really special. The GUI is designed to resemble that of a mobile app. Despite this, it looks ok on most Linux distributions, since it can be resized according to your needs.
What about other features?
Besides the ability to synchronize notes with Nextcloud Notes, Iotas also boasts offline note editing (with the ability to automatically synchronize content when the app is back online), a basic search function, the option to add notes to Favorites, and an in-built spell checker.
In terms of customization, there’s really not much. The app automatically follows your system’s style, however, you can choose between two Dark and Light themes. The app also allows you to change the font size, and that’s pretty much about it.
More information for the technically inclined
The Nextcloud Notes synchronization process is done via the REST API, not the WebDAV. This makes the app particularly fast in this regard. There’s also a basic synchronization conflict detection feature, and all your notes are constantly saved automatically.
Another thing that contributes to the speed of the app is the fact that large note collections are only partially loaded.
Final words
All in all, Iotas is a decent, little note-taking app that gets the job done without fuss. What’s nice about it is the fact that it can be used as a simple, bare-bones note-taking app, as well as a client for Nextcloud Notes.
