There are plenty of reliable comic book readers available for Linux, as well as a plethora of solid eBook readers that can also get the job done. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more specialized, let’s say, for both manga and comic book reading, then you might want check out Komikku.
Perfect little app for reading manga and comic books
Komikku is GTK app written in Python 3 and it’s totally free and open-source, and it can be installed on pretty much all Flatpak-enabled Linux distributions directly from Flathub.
The thing that makes Komikku so good is that it can do a lot of things that basic reader apps cannot. For instance, it allows you to discover new manga and comic books, it allows you to organize them, to read them online, and download them for offline use.
Feature rundown
We already mentioned that it supports for both online and offline reading, but there’s a lot more nuances that have gone into making Komikku.
In short, the app’s main focus is the user experience, and this really shows once you consider that it has various reading modes (RTL, LTR, Vertical, and Webtoon), various ways of navigation (you can use the keyboard arrows, or use the mouse – and it even has touchpad/touchscreen support).
Other nice-to-have features include automatic updates for comics, automatic download for new chapters, a simple reading history section, Light and Dark modes, and the ability to adapt to various types of screens (from desktops and laptops to smartphones and tablets).
Verdict
Komikku is a Linux-only comic book/managa reader that does almost everything right. The only real drawbacks are not entirely app-related, and have more to do with the online servers as some of them might not really always work.
All in all, a very nice manga/comic book reader that’s definitely worth a try.
