Legacy OS is an open source distribution of Linux based on the well known Puppy Linux operating system and designed to be deployed on low-end machines that use legacy hardware components.
Distributed as 32-bit Live CD
It is distributed as a single Live CD ISO image based on version 2.14 of the Puppy Linux distribution. It is compatible only with the 32-bit hardware platform and can be used directly from a USB flash drive or CD disc.
When starting the operating system for the first time, users will be prompted by an intimidating boot menu, designed only for experienced users who need a particular boot option. Our recommendation is to do nothing and wait five seconds for normal startup.
Uses the IceWM window manager
Users will have to select a keyboard layout and set up the graphics card using either X.Org or VESA framebuffer, before the graphical session starts. The desktop environment used in this lightweight distribution is powered by the IceWM window manager.
The live session is comprised on a single taskbar that can be used to launch some of the most used applications, switch between virtual workspaces, access the main menu, as well as to interact with running applications and the system tray area.
Default applications
Default applications include the Konqueror and Opera web browsers, KMail email client, KMess MSN messenger, Kadu chat client, Skype VoIP software, KTorrent torrent downloader, Prozilla download accelerator, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, and digiKam image viewer and editor.
In addition, it includes numerous other KDE utilities, such as the Konserve backup tool, Kuake terminal emulator, Kid3 audio tag editor, Kaffeine audio player, KMPlayer video player, K3b CD/DVD burning software, KMyMoney personal finance manager, etc.
