Linux Mint Debian Edition (also known as LMDE) is an open source and freely distributable Linux distribution built around the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments. It is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. A group of passionate developers from the Linux Mint community transformed Debian into a live media, on top of which they have added a new installer and all the powerful features of the Linux Mint operating system.

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian. However, Ubuntu is a very user friendly Linux operating system adopted by millions of users worldwide. On the other hand, Debian is rougher and in some aspects not as user-friendly as the Ubuntu OS. Because of this, the main goal of the Linux Mint Debian Edition operating system is to make Debian more attractive, easy to access and useable.
It is targeted at low-end computers
The distribution shares all the quality features common to other Linux Mint editions, the same desktop, the same applications and the same functionality, but with a completely different base, targeted at low-end computers. It uses many upstream components, it is modern, elegant, and includes the Software Manager application, which gives users an easy choice when it comes to installing their favorite open source apps.
Comes in two editions, with MATE and Cinnamon desktops
Initially, Linux Mint Debian Edition was distributed with the KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox and LXDE window managers, but recent editions are based only on the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments, forks of GNOME 3 & 2. LMDE provides users with a choice between 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. From a technical point of view, this distribution proves that the Linux Mint ecosystem can be easily ported to alternative package bases.
