Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS / 16.10 / 17.04 Beta 2

Welcome to the Wily Werewolf edition of the Lubuntu Linux distribution! Lubuntu is part of the Ubuntu Linux initiative and aims to provide a freely distributed, open source, lightweight, and portablecomputer operating system that relies on the latest technologies from the world’s most popular free OS, Ubuntu. It is built around LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment).

Available only for 32-bit and 64-bit architectures

The Wily Werewolf edition of Lubuntu is tagged by its creators as build 15.10 and will be officially unveiled by Canonical on October 2015, supported with software updates, security fixes, and kernel patches for nine months, until July 2016. This is the first edition of Lubuntu that drops support for the PowerPC (PPC) platform, and it now supports only the 64-bit (x86_64/amd64) and 32-bit (x86/i386) hardware architectures.

The boot options haven’t changed a bit

Lubuntu 15.10  is available for download for free, always, as ISO images. It is currently distributed in two editions, Desktop and Alternate, supporting the aforementioned CPU architectures. The user can write the ISO images to either USB sticks or DVD discs. The boot options have not changed from the previous version of the distribution and allow users to try the operating system without installing it, check the bootable medium for defects (only if booting from a DVD), start the installation directly, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, or test their computer’s memory.

Lightweight, easy-to-use, and very fast desktop interface

As mentioned, Lubuntu is built around the LXDE desktop environment, which has been designed from the offset to be low on resources. Thus, Lubuntu has been targeted at low-end machines or computers with old and semi-old hardware components. LXDE’s desktop layout consists of single panel (taskbar) located on the bottom edge of the screen, which includes the usual applets that help you interact easily with the OS, such as Applications Menu, Applications Launcher, Task Manager, Workspace Switcher, and System Tray.

Offers a great set of open-source applications
