PCLinuxOS Br Edition LXDE 2018.1

PCLinuxOS Br Edition LXDE is an open source Linux distribution based on the well known PCLinuxOS operating system and built around the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE).

It has been designed from the ground up to be used by people from the Brazilian Linux community who dig the PCLinuxOS distribution and love the LXDE desktop environment. However, the project also provides KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, Razor-qt, IceWM, and Openbox editions.

Availability and boot options

This LXDE edition is available for download as a single Live DVD ISO-hybrid image, which can be written to a blank DVD disc or use directly from a USB stick. The Live DVD has no login screen, but, if asked, you can use the guest or root usernames and passwords.

Default boot options include the ability to run the live environment with default options, without the boot splash, in safe graphics mode, or in failsafe mode. It is also possible to copy the entire ISO to RAM (system memory), drop to a Linux console, or install the entire distribution without testing it (not recommended).

Lightweight desktop environment, lightweight applications

The LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) project provides users with a modern, yet low on resources graphical session. It provides a single, transparent taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen and used for launching apps, accessing the main menu, and interacting with running programs and the system tray area.

Default applications include the PCManFM file manager, BleachBit system cleaner, XnViewMP image viewer, Evince document viewer, XSane scanner interface, Screenie screenshot utility, GNOME MPlayer video player, Synaptic Package Manager, and Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Bottom line

All in all, PCLinuxOS Br Edition LXDE proves to be quite a good flavor of this Brazilian PCLinuxOS project, providing users with both a good looking and lightweight desktop environment, as well as a great selection of open source apps. It consumes about 120 MB of RAM on start-up.
