Quick Settings Avatar v7

Quick Settings Avatar is one of the many really nice GNOME shell extensions launched after the introduction of GNOME 43. As its name clearly states, it simply adds your user picture (avatar thumbnail) to the Quick Settings panel, right next to the system-related settings.

By now, it should be quite clear that this is by no means the most complex GNOME Shell extension for the new GNOME 43 Quick Settings menu. It only displays the user avatar in Quick Settings, and that’s about it.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Quick Settings Avatar doesn’t boast a lot of features. So far, it has two “features:” first, it allows you to choose the placement of the avatar (either in the right side or the left side of the Quick Settings menu), and second, clicking it opens the User settings of Ubuntu.

According to the project’s GitHub repository, future features include support for a sub-menu with user-related actions such as Log out, Switch user, and Lock screen, a bigger avatar thumbnail, and the option to remove system settings toggles.

Quick Settings Avatar is a rather modest, and non-impressive GNOME Shell extension, and it feels that it should be apart of something bigger. Not surprising the developers are not excluding the option of adding Quick Settings Avatar to the Quick Settings Tweaker, probably the best GNOME Shell for customizing the Quick Settings menu.

Quick Settings Avatar won’t blow anyone’s pants off, but if you really want an avatar preview in the new GNOME 43 Quick Settings menu, then it should be the perfect tool for the job. All that’s left to do is give it a try.
