RubyMine is dubbed by many as the best Ruby/JavaScript editor currently available.

Granted, it’s not a perfect solution, as it does require you to pay a premium in order to use it for more than 30 days and, as most JetBrains products, they’re not particularly well suited for low-end machines.

Nevertheless, most JetBrains products are a “good bang for the buck,” and RubyMine is no exception. Its sublime support for version control systems, its dozen integrations, and class-leading plugin support, as well as the plethora of advanced features, all recommend it as being a good all-in-one IDE solution for Ruby/Rails, and JavaScript programming.

The basics

RubyMine looks and feels just like all its JetBrains counterparts. It comes with support for JavaScript, Ruby and Rails, CoffeScript, ERB and HAML, CSS, Sass and Less, and many others.

It boasts all the excellent language-specific syntax and error highlighting, code formatting, code completion, and the ability to quickly read about potential problems on the fly.

Fast navigation is flawless with the help of its smart search function, and the detection and code inspections elements are also something worth having.

Features like clipboard history, automatic completion, live templates, underline syntax errors in real-time in both JavaScript and Ruby, the ability to configure automatic spell checking for comments (and not for code), are just some of the small details that make RubyMine one of the best IDEs out there.

Doesn’t lack advanced features, that’s for sure

One of the best aspects of RubyMine is the amount of integrated tools. For example, the app allows you to browse unsuccessful failing tests, and find the problems, and filter them output for each test individually.

Running a server or rake tasks is also something that RubyMine is quite adept at. The Git support is also top-notch and allows you to perform all a wide range of Git-specific tasks such as pull, merge changes and commit.

Last but not least, the app boasts seamless integration with tools such as Rake Task Runner, Bundler, RVM/Rbenv, Rails Generator, and many more.

Verdict

In the world of IDEs, there’s no singular product that is perfect. Some developers might prefer plain editors over the usage of full-featured behemoths that is RubyMine. Other smaller IDEs might be better at specific jobs, others might put less strain on the system, and there are also a lot of free alternatives out there.

Still, when it comes to flexibility and the overall power of a Ruby and JavaScript editor, there aren’t many out there who can battle it out with RubyMine.
