Rymdport 3.5.3

There are numerous tools out there for transferring files and folders between devices, but most of them either require some sort of more or less laborious setup, or at least that you create an account.

magic-wormhole is one tool that gets the same job done without the need to fiddle about with configurations. The way it works is quite straightforward: the recipient must know a few secret words and the file is securely encrypted and delivered to the designated computer.

Formerly known as wormhole-gui, Rymdport is a very efficient, free and open-source, cross-platform app that allows you to share files quickly and securely between devices.

It uses the same protocol as magic-wormhole which means two things: firstly, that the data is end-to-end encrypted, and secondly that the app is capable of working with other wormhole clients.

Another interesting detail about this app is that it actually uses a native Go implementation of magic-wormhole called wormhole-william.

The end result is an app that compiles files into native binaries with pretty much no runtime dependencies (making it blisteringly fast).

The short answer is – it’s pretty decent. Like most other apps using the wormhole protocol, it has three main sections: Send, Receive, and Settings.

While there’s nothing spectacular worth mentioning about the first two sections, the Settings section is/can be a bit of a surprise.

The Settings section provides you with a various ways to tweak your experience with the app, starting with the ability to tweak the scale of the GUI, its main color (and themes and accents), and ending with options to tweak how the data is handled (change the destination folder, overwrite files, or turn notifications on or off), as well as various Wormhole-specific options.

It may not be that obvious at first, but “rymdport” is actually a Swedish word and it means “space gate,” which is not only cool, but also quite appropriate for the app, as the app uses the wormhole protocol, and a wormhole is, as we all know, a speculative structure linking disparate points in spacetime.

To conclude, if you’re looking for a quick way to share files between devices, you can’t really go wrong with Rymdport.
