Sabayon Linux KDE 17.05

Sabayon Linux KDE is a free and open source Linux distribution based on the Gentoo Linux operating system and built on a bleeding-edge, yet stable and reliable KDE desktop environment. Separate GNOME, Xfce, Openbox (Minimal) and SpinBase editions of Sabayon Linux are available for download on Softpedia.

Availability, supported architectures and boot options

This Sabayon edition is available for download as Live DVD ISO images or approximately 2GB in size, which makes it the biggest Sabayon flavor. It is fully compatible only with the 64-bit (amd64) hardware platform.

The boot menu is identical with the one of the Sabayon Linux GNOME edition, allowing users to try the operating system without installing anything on their computers using the default settings or the safe graphics mode, check the disc for defects (only if using a DVD media), and drop to a shell prompt.

In addition, the distribution can be directly installed to a local disk drive using one of the three installation methods provided on the boot prompt, as a regular workstation, as a media center or as a gaming system.

Familiar desktop environment, powerful applications

The beautiful desktop environment (see the screenshot above) is powered by the award winning KDE Plasma Workspaces and Applications project, which provides users with a modern, traditional, familiar and powerful graphical session that uses a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen.

Launching applications, switching between the four virtual workspaces, interacting with running programs, as well as the system tray area is only possible with this semi-transparent taskbar of the KDE desktop environment.

Default applications include Chromium and Konqueror web browsers, Gwenview image viewer, Okular document viewer, KWrite text editor, Clementine audio player, K3b CD/DVD/BD burning tool, XBMC Media Center, VLC Media Player, Kopete instant messenger, Konversation IRC client, as well as Steam for Linux.

Additionally, it comes with the KOrganizer personal organizer, Marble virtual globe, Qt Designer UI builder, DNGConverter DNG image converter, Akregator feed reader, Klipper clipboard manager, KNotes note-taking utility, TiMidity++ MIDI sequencer, and Kontact PIM (Personal Information Manager) software.

Bottom line

Summing up, Sabayon Linux KDE is yet another astonishing edition of the well known Gentoo-based operating system, which can turn a high-end machine into a media center, dedicated gaming system, or standalone workstation.
