Sabayon Linux SpinBase is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Gentoo operating system, specifically designed for Linux experts and advanced users who want to set up a home server or create their very own operating system, based on Sabayon.
Availability, boot options, supported architectures
Sabayon is usually distributed into multiple editions, with the GNOME, KDE, Xfce and Openbox desktop environments. It provides users with a new release each month and it’s compatible only with the 64-bit hardware platform.
The SpinBase edition is available for download as two Live CD ISO-hybrid images, which can be written to USB flash drives using either GNOME Disks or UNetbootin, as well as burned onto CD discs using any CD/DVD burning software.
From the boot menu, you can start the live environment with default options or without boot splash (verbose mode), install the operating system to a local disk drive, check the disk for defects (only if using a CD media), boot an existing OS installed on the first disk, as well as to use the console, debug and safe modes.
In addition, users can press the F1 key to see a help screen, press F2 to change the language, choose a different keyboard layout by pressing the F3 key, and add extra boot parameters using the F5 key on their keyboards.
No graphical session for this Sabayon edition
This edition features no desktop environment, as it will immediately drop users to a shell prompt, from where they can set up a home server or start building their own Sabayon Linux operating system, using the comprehensive instructions provided on the project’s homepage.
Bottom line
Summing up, Sabayon Linux SpinBase is a free distribution of Linux that provides a minimal environment for those who want to build their very own operating system based on Sabayon Linux, which in turn is based on Gentoo.
