Ubuntu-based Linux distribution that contains extra Christian software and is pre-configured with web content filtering
What’s new in Ubuntu Christian Edition 20.04.3:
- Changed:
- Host Minder now includes an Allow List
- Updated UbuntuCE Welcome with tabbed layout
As its name suggests, Ubuntu Christian Edition is an Ubuntu-based OS geared towards Christians. It boasts the same features and default apps as Ubuntu (it is based directly on the standard Ubuntu distribution) but contains a series of extra software and some neat security features.
The goal of the project is to “draw a larger Christian base to the already thriving community of Ubuntu users.” It looks very much the same as Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, with very few tweaks and some new Christian-themed wallpapers.
Extra features
Apart from the new Christian-biased wallpapers, Ubuntu Christian Edition comes pre-packed with a few interesting features as well.
These include the web content filtering engine, a DNS minder, a host minder, various Bible study apps, as well as a series of software specifically designed for churches.
The web content filter engine is powered by CleanBrowsing with the main purpose of blocking obscene or inappropriate content. It’s also one of the fastest and most secure DNS.
Alternatively, users can choose to use OpenDNS FamilyShield, which pretty much does the same job, that of protecting users from inappropriate adult content.
To make the switch, simply locate the DNS Minder menu, and select between the two DNS providers from the list. The Host minder provides a quick and easy way of blocking unwanted websites and content from your system (ads, porn, gambling, and fake news content).
Ubuntu Christian Edition also packs a few Bible study software. This includes BibleTime, Xiphos, and Bibledit.
The OpenLP and Presenter by WP apps are specifically added to make Ubuntu Christian Edition a lot more appealing for churches or church representatives.
Verdict
Even though it’s not officially supported by Canonical, Ubuntu Christian Edition is a nice unofficial Ubuntu flavor for Christians around the world. It packs a few interesting web content filtering/blocking features, a few bespoke wallpapers, as well as a series of church and Bible study apps.
