A Lite version of the Ultimate Edition Linux distribution, based on the Ubuntu OS
Ultimate Edition Lite is an open source Linux distribution, a special flavor of the Ultimate Edition distro, based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu. It does not feature desktop effects, big and heavy office suite, just the pure essential apps that you need.
Available only as a 64-bit Live DVD
Even though previous releases of this product were distributed for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, the current version can be downloaded only as a 64-bit Live DVD ISO image that will run only on amd64 (x86_64) computers and supports either 32-bit or 64-bit applications.
Boot options
The boot menu is quite comprehensive, allowing the user to try the operating system without installing anything, permanently install the distro on a local drive, check the integrity of the bootable medium (only if using a DVD media), test the RAM for errors, boot from the first disk, access the expert installation (graphical or text-mode), as well as to enter the rescue mode.
Lightweight operating system powered by MATE
Being a lightweight distribution of Linux, Ultimate Edition Lite features the MATE desktop environment, a clone of the GNOME Classic session, which uses a two-panel layout.
Default applications
Default applications include the Chromium web browser, gFTP file transfer client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Wireshark network scanner, Calibre ebook library management software, Amarok audio player, DeVeDe DVD-Video authoring tool, GIMP image editor, Phatch photo batch processor, EasyTAG audio tagger, ISO Master CD image editor and burner, K3b and Brasero CD/DVD burning software, VLC Media Player and Cheese webcam viewer.
Bottom line
Ultimate Edition Lite is a great distribution of Linux that is lightning fast on high-end machines and works great on low-end system or computers with old and semi-old hardware components. However, do not hesitate to try the original Ultimate Edition operating system!
