Debian Live KDE 9.2.0

Debian Live KDE is an open source Linux-based operating system that uses the modern KDE Software Compilation project as its default desktop environment. It is based on the latest stable release of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.

The Debian Live project also provides users with GNOME, Xfce and LXDE editions, as well as a rescue CD and a standard (barebone) flavor that allows experienced users to install a fully customized version of the Debian operating system.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs

Just like all the aforementioned flavors, the KDE edition it distributed as two Live DVD ISO-hybrid images that can be deployed to either USB flash drives or blank DVD discs. Both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures are supported at this time.

The Live mediums can be used as-is, only to test the KDE desktop environment and pre-installed applications, as well as to install the entire operating system on a local disk drive. In addition, users can run a memory diagnostic test or view detailed information about the hardware components of a computer straight from the boot prompt.

Simple and traditional KDE desktop environment with lots of apps

The KDE session is comprised of a single taskbar, from where users can launch programs, interact with running applications, as well as to access the functions implemented in the system tray area.

As expected, all the default KDE application are pre-installed, such as Dolphin file manager, KMail email client, Konqueror web browser, Kopete instant messenger, Akregator feed reader, Okular document viewer, Gwenview image viewer, K3b CD/DVD burning software, JuK music player, Dragon Player video playback software, Apper package manager, as well as the Kate and KWrite text editors.

In addition, it includes the Iceweasel web browser, GIMP image editor, VLC Media Player, and the LibreOffice office suite. Support for the Java web technology is also added in this Live KDE edition of Debian GNU/Linux.

Bottom line

During our tests, we’ve found no issues with this Debian Live flavor, except for the fact that is uses a very old release of the KDE desktop environment.
