Stendhal is an open source, cross-platform and free software project that has been designed from the ground up to act as a role-playing game (RPG) where players get to explore cities, caverns, forests and plains, while meeting hundreds of NPCs (non-player characters).

Features at a glance

When playing Stendhal, users will get to help a lot of people to get rid of dragons, complete quests to gain experience, solve puzzles, and so on. Characters will gain new levels, becomes stronger and powerful, which means that you will have to improve their armor, buy new weapons, as well as to interact with other players from the community.

Build on top of Arianne RPG

Stendhal is distributed as part of the Arianne RPG project, which is an open source game engine aimed at developing multiplayer Online games. Of course, this means that Stendhal is built on top of Arianne RPG.

Under the hood and availability

Both Arianne and Stendhal are written in a mix of the Java, PHP and Python programming languages. It is supported on both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, available for download as universal source archive, which requires users to configure and compile the program prior to installation.

As mentioned, Stendhal is a cross-platform software project, which means that it has been successfully tested on the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, as well as on any GNU/Linux distribution.
